Research interests:

Michael Jones has undertaken research in historical geography and landscape studies. His interest in landscape and law goes back to the 1960s, when in his doctoral thesis he examined the interaction between central legislation, local customary institutions and landscape on emergent coastlands in western Finland. He is at present participating in a project financed by the Research Council of Norway on customary rights, cultural practice and biodiversity, and is involved in a Nordic book project conceptualizing landscape in relation to national, regional and local identity. He is currently also working on a study of geographical manifestations of customary udal law in Orkney and Shetland. Interactions between central legislation and local institutions in shaping the landscape, and processes of continuity and change in customary law institutions, are his main foci of interest.
