Travel in Oslo
Most of you probably arrive at Gardermoen Airport, somewhat outside Oslo . The simplest thing is to take the airport train to Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”): you go to the West end of the arrival level, buy a ticket at the counter or at one of the machines, it costs 160.- Norwegian Krowns (NK). You validate the ticket right after the ticket counter, and go down the stairs, directly to the platform. The time to Oslo S is approximately 25 min. Half of the trains stop there, the rest continues further west, so be careful not to fall a sleep! The number of trains pr. hour vary during the day, but typically there is one every 15 min. In case several of you arrive together, one MIGHT get a taxi to Lysebu for a fixed price, probably around 600.- NK, but here I am a bit uncertain, so IF you try, be careful to have the agreement with the driver BEFORE the trip, not all taxi-companies have such a fixed-price agreement. For others, it might be just as simple to come by train. From Oslo S you might take a taxi to Lysebu, but it is relatively expensive, 300 – 400 KR pr. taxi, with up to 4, maybe 5, passengers. (Yes, I know it looks strange as compared to the price from Gardermoen which is a much longer distance away, but the point is that there are to my knowledge no fixed price agreements here). If you fill the taxi up, it may not be so bad, though. The alternative is to take the subway (T train, or T-bane, in Norwegian) line no. 1, with end-station marked “Frognerseteren”. To take this connection, you go to the right at Oslo S (i.e. north, or opposite of the direction to the Oslo-fjord) and down some stairs at the end. This part is a bit tricky, but people will help you, I'm sure, if you get lost. Here you have to buy a ticket at a machine; I do not think there is a manned office here. There are only two platforms with different entrances, one West (the one you take) and one East, but your chances of making a mistake at Oslo S are slim. Depending on the time of the day, there are somewhat more line no. 1 trains departing from the Majorstuen station, so if you like you can go there first. ALL westgoing T-trains stop at Majorstuen station, so that is easy.
The ticket you buy at Oslo S is valid for an hour, i.e. you have to enter the final means of transport within that hour, so you can get all the way to Lysebu, unless you go sightseeing in between. After “Majorstuen” station, it is no longer a subway, but over ground. Actually, you get one of the nicest views of Oslo from here. Be careful to take a window seat in the left, or sea side of the train. You go to the next to final stop called “Voksenkollen”. The time from “Oslo S” to “Majorstuen” is approx. 10 min, and then from “Majorstuen” to “Voksenkollen” it is approx. 25 min. From there it is walking distance to Lysebu, some 800 m, see attached map. (The train line is given by a dashed blue line on the map, and not all stations are marked!)
Now; those interested in going downtown in the evenings, just MIGHT be interested in buying a “Flexikort”. It costs 150.- NK for 8 trips, each equivalent to a ticket you buy at the machine, but the PRICE pr. ticket is much smaller. These Flexicards can be bought at the machine or at a manned ticket office or, even simpler, in any “Narvesen” shop at the stations. These are where you buy newspapers, candy, whatever, and they are everywhere, and open often quite late. Just an idea! (Actually, “Narvesen” sells single tickets as well.)
In case anybody arrives by boat, for instance from Copenhagen or Kiel , you do best by taking a taxi to “Majorstuen Station”, I guess it costs about 150.- NK, or so. From there you proceed as outlined before.
